The Canaries

The Canaries are the perfect place for a holiday at any time of the year. They are popular amongst Europeans throughout the year, and a favourite destination of those living in Spain. Although geographically African, the islands are Spanish, and you will find typical Mediterranean customs mixed with local flavours.  Their year round good weather mean they are a popular summer and winter break destination, and they boast a varied landscape with mountains, long stretches of sand and interesting coves.

History

The Spanish conquered the islands in the early 15th century and thus introduced Spanish culture amongst the native Guanch population’s simple way of life. Thus began the establishment of the area as an important position in Spain’s forages to Latin America. An important centre for commercial trades, the islands began to also realise their tourist potentials. A network of tourist accommodation was created, and with that all the necessary infrastructure to support the growing industry.

Things to see and do

The islands boast many local traditions, there is local dance and some influences from Al Andalus, and clothing in vibrant colours. Locals pride themselves on their traditions, including the timple used to accompany the dancing. Craftwork is an important part of the tourism industry here, and you can pick up some nice pieces of materials embroidered with pretty patterns, as well as wood carvings and clay artefacts.

During your stay you can pick up some great huren spanje, thanks to the tax free shopping available. Favourite items include drink, cigarettes and electronics. There is also a good trade of traditional African artefacts for sale on the island.

Whilst there, if you are interested in sport, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The sea pervades daily life on the islands, and you’ll be able to complete all types of watersports imaginable. There’s also crazy golf, volleyball, as well as sporting activities native to the island.

The islands are easily accessible from the EU, and you’ll find a great abundance of cheap charter flights during the summer and winter months from many European destinations. You can also access the islands by sea. If you wish to get from one island to the other, you’ll have no shortage of boats ready to take you across.

Local cuisine consists mainly of seafood, and the potato is a common accompaniment. The locals love bananas, as well as tomatoes and all sorts of local exotic fruits that are readily available. A local rum is produced and is very tasty.
